Smart Glasses for Enterprise

Augmented reality glasses for warehouse workers
Picture
Working with the Recon Jet team at Intel, I learned about a day in the life of a warehouse worker, interpreting that day into recommendations for interaction design.

I learned that warehouse workers are often technology shy, they prefer physical work to working with technology, which means significant attention must be paid to training and onboarding. I took measurements on light ranges and noise levels to inform the interaction design and measured the optical field to help the team determine how to provide for those who need prescription glasses.

Unfortunately, the follow-on product was stopped short of production.

Online Ethnography

As an early needs gathering exercise, we reached out to workers across the US in manufacturing, quality checking, field work, warehouse work and management.
With this online diary, workers were able to share a day in their life from the tools they use to the tasks they are working to accomplish.

Human Factors

The product team needed guidelines for noise, light, and information on lens size to understand how the smart glasses would perform with existing prescription glasses.
I provided detailed information on noise and light levels as well as measurements for each of the prescription inserts being considered and a recommendation for a partner lens product.

Warehouse Shadowing

Workers were given a pair of smart glasses re-purposed for picking and packing (ReconJet). By shadowing workers in Arizona and Texas, we began to understand the intricacies of their work and inform the final design of a follow on product as well as informing the UI.
